Exhibit Opening – Natives and Newcomers: A Hidden History

Please join us for the opening of “Natives and Newcomers: A Hidden History,” an exhibit curated by AMS 470 & 570 in collaboration with UA Libraries Special Collections. The opening reception is on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, from 4:30 to 5:30.The exhibit will be on display in the Williams Collection Reading Room, Gorgas Library, room 301, from December 7, 2017, through March 31, 2018.

This student-driven American Studies project highlights archives and rare books that reflect the histories and cultures of various Native American peoples. Largely created by the white travelers and settlers who encountered them, these primary source materials have a context that makes interpretation challenging. Each item in the exhibit was selected, analyzed, and described by a student in the class. The students also helped arrange the items into thematic groupings, building upon knowledge developed through various course activities and assignments.

Dr. Mairin Odle, the course instructor, and Dr. Kate Matheny, the library liaison, will be on hand to discuss the curation process. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Exhibit will be on display until March 31, 2018
